Getting Started

Powered by FreeBSDOn-line Documentation

See Document Downloads below for more.

Introduction

The Virtual Private Server (VPS) acts much like your own, dedicated FreeBSD UNIX machine. It comes in two flavors, the VPS version 1 (VPS A, VPS B, VPS C) and the VPS version 2 (VPS Basic, VPS 1000, VPS 2000, VPS 3000, VPS Standard, VPS Pro, VPS Pro Plus).

The VPS version 1 has a single user for use with telnet or ssh. You can create additional users for email or ftp access. The telnet/ssh user, although not "root," has virtually all privileges that a UNIX superuser has.

The VPS version 2 truly acts like a UNIX machine. You will receive an administrative username and password and a root password. The administrative user can "su" to root.

Configuring Email Clients

The Virtual Private Server allows you to check your email using either your own email client software (including Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora and others) or the web.

  • See this Configuring Email Clients page
  • The default SMTP port (25) is blocked by many ISPs as a measure to prevent spam. If you find that you cannot send mail, try changing the SMTP port to to either 5190 or 587. Ports 5190 and 587 are auxiliary SMTP ports supported by your VPS.

Note: If you are migrating your email from another server to a new Signature Hosting or VPS server, telephone (866)HENS-NET or (636)447-3030before making any changes to your email client! We will guide you through the migration process to assure that you do not lose any email.

FreeBSD Documentation

Powered by FreeBSDThe FreeBSD Project provides a huge body of on-line documentation which is pertinent to the VPS Standard, VPS Pro and VPS Pro Plus. In particular, we recommend:

Tips

The VPS A has a few limitations which do not apply to any of the other virtual private servers:

  1. Only the primary user has FTP access. Although you can create additional users and you can grant FTP access with either the "vadduser" command or with iManager, they will not be able to use FTP.
  2. Only the first 10 users may use email. Although you can create an unlimited number of users with either the "vadduser" command or with iManager, only the primary user plus nine more will be able to receive email.
  3. Only one user can use IMAP to check email. All others must use POP.

The VPS version 1 (VPS A, B and C) only allows telnet/ssh access to the primary user. None of the users created with vadduser or iManager will be able to log in with telnet or ssh.
