Getting Started
The Signature Hosting
account is a full-featured, shared hosting account based on FreeBSD UNIX.
You will find that, in all likelyhood, it contains everything that you
want
from
your
hosting
account:
exceptional reliability, high performance, unlimited email, MySQL database,
Perl and PHP, etc.
The Signature Hosting accounts are provided by ViaVerio. Click

Features
Configuring Email Clients
The Signature Hosting account allows you to check
your email using either your own email client software (including Microsoft
Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora and others) or the web.
- See "Task 5" of this Getting
Started Guide
- The default SMTP port (25) is blocked by many ISPs as a measure to
prevent spam. If you find that you cannot send mail, try changing the
SMTP port to to either 5190 or 587. Ports 5190 and 587 are auxiliary
SMTP ports supported by your Signature Hosting
account.
Note: If you are migrating your email from another server to a
new Signature Hosting or VPS server, telephone
(866)HENS-NET or (636)447-3030before making any changes
to your email client! We will guide you through the migration
process to assure that you do not lose any email.

Tips
Spam Filter Services
The spam filtering service offered through your Control Panel is SpamAssassin.
This program automatically delivers suspected spam email messages to your
Trash folder.
Important:
Custom Mail Filters and Spam Filter Service filters are independent of
each other. However, if you have enabled Custom Mail Filters and you
also have subscribed to Spam Filter Services, mail is filtered through
Custom Mail Filters first and then through any active Spam Filter Service
filters. If Custom Mail Filters are disabled, active Spam Filter Service
filters continue to filter mail until you clear the Subscribe to check
box.
Warning:
Mail filtering is not a perfect science. If you have set up any filters
(including SpamAssassin) to block spam or other unwanted email messages,
you must regularly check the Trash folder before emptying it; you might
find that some messages you wanted to receive have been filtered to the
Trash folder.
To subscribe to SpamAssassin:
- Select My Mail from the drop-down list at the top of the window. The
My Mail Home page appears.
- Click the Options tab. The My Mail Options
page appears.
- In the Mailbox Options window, click Spam filter services.
The Spam Filter Services window appears.
- Select Subscribe to SpamAssassin.
- Click Save. The Custom Mail Filters
window appears with a message informing you that your changes have
been saved.
To un-subscribe from SpamAssassin:
- Select My Mail from the drop-down list at the top of the window. The
My Mail Home page appears.
- Click the Options tab. The My Mail Options page
appears.
- In the Mailbox Options window, click Spam filter services.
The Spam Filter Services window appears.
- Clear the Subscribe to SpamAssassin
check box.
- Click Save. The Custom Mail Filters window appears with a
message informing you that your changes have been saved.
Virus Scanning Services
The virus scanner service offered through your Control Panel is ClamAV.
This program automatically routes email messages which contain viruses
to a folder named Quarantine.
Warning:
While ClamAV is an excellent anti-virus program, it should NOT be used
as a replacement for anti-virus software on your local PC. ClamAV is designed
to supplement such programs and provide additional safeguards, but does
not provide the extensive capabilities that a local anti-virus program
can provide.
To subscribe to ClamAV:
- Select My Mail from the drop-down list at the top of the window. The
My Mail Home page appears.
- Click the Options tab. The My Mail Options page appears.
- In the Mailbox Options window, click Virus scanning services. The Spam
Filter Services window appears.
- Select Subscribe to ClamAV.
- Click Save.
To un-subscribe from ClamAV:
- Select My Mail from the drop-down list at the top of the window. The
My Mail Home page appears.
- Click the Options tab. The My Mail Options page appears.
- In the Mailbox Options window, click Virus scanning services. The Spam
Filter Services window appears.
- De-select Subscribe to ClamAV.
- Click Save.
Low Disk Space
Like garages, disks fill up. Unfortunately, cleaning up a computer disk
is no easier than persuading your teenage son to sweep out the garage.
Fortunately, the following guidelines can help you find the files that
are filling your disk. You can then delete the files that you no longer
need.
- Run
the vdiskuse command to find out how much space is being used in each
of your directories. You can do this from the UNIX command prompt by
logging in with telnet or
ssh.
You
can
also
run
this
in your
web browser
by accessing http://yourdomain/cgi-bin/vdiskuse (click
here if vdiskuse is not installed on your server).
- Use the File Manager within the Control Panel to explore your directories.
The following are directories that often get very large:
- users/username/mail — contains mail folders. Often people
forget to empty the Trash folder. You can also encourage people to
delete old email or to download it to their desktop computer.
- www/logs — contains log files for all activity on your web
site. Old log files are automatically compressed (to use less disk
space) but are never automatically deleted. You can delete old files
if you no longer want them.
Alternatively, you can add more disk space to your account. Please phone
(866)HENS-NET or (636)447-3030if you would like help resolving
a low disk space situation.
