What is an Email Mailing List?

An email mailing list allows you to send an email message to a single email address. And then a computer, the mailing list server, redistributes your message to all of the subscribers.

For example, if you coach a kids soccer team named the Rockets, you might get a mailing list named rockets@lists.hens-teeth.net. When it is time to tell all of the parents where the end-of-the-season pool party is going to be, you would send your message to rockets@lists.hens-teeth.net and every parent would receive it. You do not need to know everyone's email address!

Uses for a Mailing List

Any group can effectively use one or more mailing lists. Many organizations, such as intramural sports teams and congregations, have one list for sending out official announcements and a second list for general chit-chat. Some groups create additional lists, e.g., one for teenagers, one for the fundraising committee, one for planning upcoming events, etc.

If you need to send email to multiple people and it is becoming a problem to keep track of everyone's email address... a mailing list is the right solution!

Security

Every mailing list has at least one list administrator. The administrator can assure that the list is completely secure. For instance, if you have a list of children, the administrator can assure that only authorized members can post messages to the list or receive messages from the list. Similarly, the administrator can choose to keep the names and email addresses of the list subscribers 100% private.

The Virtual Private Servers include support for open-source mailing list managers (e.g., Mailman and Majordomo) without additional cost. The customer is responsible for installation and configuration of such open-source tools. Alternatively, the customer may pay a one-time fee and Hen's Teeth Network will install and configure the mailing list manager software.
