Cloud Hosting Data Transfer Fees

HTN Cloud Hosting accounts "unbundle" the costs of running your computer from the costs of moving data to and from your computer. For most web sites, this will save you money. For instance, if you need to store lots of photos but relatively few of them are used each month, you pay for the storage but not for a lot of bandwidth which you will not use. On the other hand, if you have a comparatively small web site but get lots of traffic each month, you pay for the traffic but not for a huge computer which would sit mostly empty.

How Big is It?

The monthly allowance is generous enough that you should rarely have to pay anything above your monthly hosting fee. Every web site will have a unique situation but here are a couple of examples from real web sites:

• An e-commerce site with tens of thousands of visitors monthly is hosted on a $279 account. During the December 2009 Christmas shopping season, this site used about 18 GB of data transfer, valued at $3.96. Since the account has a data transfer allowance of $13.95, no charges were incurred.
• The Hen's Teeth Network web sites, as a group, use data transfer valued at about $1.00 and run on an account with a monthly data transfer allowance of $6.95.

Background

All HTN Cloud Hosting accounts include an allowance of free data transfer every month. This allowance is large enough that you should rarely, if ever, be charged for addtional data tranfer fees. If you do exceed the allowance, you will be charged at these rates:

The monthly data transfer allowance is equal to 5% of your hosting fee. If your account costs $39.00 per month then you have a $1.95 allowance; if your account costs $279.00 per month then you have a $13.95 allowance; etc.
