Art Zemon

Customer Service Agent & Web Site Builder

You will be one of the main people helping our hosting customers understand and use their accounts. You will get to solve problems ranging from "How do I log in?" to "How do I password protect a directory on my web site?" Though you will be on the front line, you won't be alone; you can always turn to the other folks at Hen's Teeth Network for support.

You will build and update web sites, jockeying HTML, CSS and jQuery with the best of 'em. If you know JavaScript and PHP, that's great but we have programmers on staff who can take on the heavy-duty programming tasks. Many of the web sites you build and maintain will be "dynamic" based on systems such as WordPress, Magento and PDG Commerce.

You will have an intimate understanding of e-commerce and will be able to set up stores and train our customers in how to run them. This includes setting up the payment methods (payment processing gateways, PayPal, etc.), the shipping (such as real time quotes from UPS, FedEx and USPS), and sales tax rules. You will also guide store-owners through everything from getting reasonably sized images and thumbnails for their products, through the complexities of setting up discounting and free offers, etc., etc., etc.

You will be responsible for key parts of our customers' businesses. You will have god-like powers across all of our servers and you will have the integrity to use your power wisely. ("Do no evil" is not good enough.) You will carry a cell phone which receives after-hours tech support calls (as do the rest of us) but you will work hard to ensure that customers don't need to call us after hours.

You will be inquisitive and open to learning. Whether it is a new customer's business or a new technology, you will welcome the chance to acquire new skills.

You will whole-heartedly support our mission: We help our clients improve their businesses by turning the internet and the web into useful tools.

Most important, you will be part of a team. We all lean on each other, leveraging the unique skills that every one of us brings to the table. We learn from each other. We celebrate everyone's successes.

Compensation

We are a midwest-based company and all of us work from our homes. Our salary range reflects that reality. We don't care where you live but you should know up-front that we do not pay the kinds of salaries that you can earn by working in a shiny office building in LA or Chicago or Boston. In lieu of cash, you get to give up commuting, give up working nights and weekends, and you get to let us pay for your health insurance, computer and software.

How to Apply

Interested? We'd love to hear from you. Here are the non-negotiable requirements for applying.

  • You must be legally eligible to work permanently in the United States. We do not discriminate in any way so race, religion, personal preferences, physical ability, etc. don't matter. Sorry, we cannot help you obtain or retain a work visa.
  • English must be your primary language or, to be more precise, you must speak and write English so well that a native English speaker is comfortable communicating with you.
  • You must be available for an all-staff telephone meeting at 8:30am central time, every day, Monday through Friday. If you live west of the central timezone or you are a late riser, think carefully about this one.
  • You must have at least two years full-time professional employment experience building web sites with HTML and CSS and which includes a lot of time working directly with customers. Sorry, no fresh college grads.
  • You must email your info to Art Zemon <art@hens-teeth.net>. Include your resume, pointers to some web sites you have built or worked on, your phone number(s), and the best time(s) to call you.

If you fail to meet any of those requirements, you will not get the job.

The people at Hen's Teeth Network were very helpful in getting a useful backup solution set up for us. When they hit a snag, they worked late to get everything just right. Having Nest Egg Backup for Web Servers in place gives our clients and us peace of mind.
